The passengers from BU21 fell from 4,500 feet… I looked it up on the internet, how long a fall from 4,500 feet takes. 22 seconds.
22nd July 2016. A beautiful sunny morning in London, planes leaving vapour trails across a cloudless sky. Then a sudden flash of light and, for thousands of people across the capital, everything changes forever.
BU21 is based on real testimonies gathered from a variety of terrorist incidents including the 7/7 bombings, 9/11, the Paris attacks and the 2013 Westgate shopping mall attack. It follows six young people in the wake of a fictitious attack in the heart of London. In turns terrifying, inspiring, brutal, heart-breaking and hilarious, is this our very near future?
Writer Stuart Slade says
BU21 is a play that functions right on the edge of what it’s possible to talk about as a human, encompassing both deep trauma and overpowering love. The play was two years in development and, as with Cans, the parts were written very specifically for Kuleshov’s amazing company of actors, led by the truly astonishing Dan Pick, all of whom contributed an enormous amount from the very start of the process.’
Stuart is also the Creative Director of a film production company specialising in documentary films and digital media about Disaster Response. As such he has produced films in places such as Gaza, South Sudan, Haiti, and Nepal. After starring in Cans, Graham O’Mara is once again working with Stuart Slade and plays Graham.
Joining him are in BU21 are: Florence Roberts (Shakespeare in Love (West End), Arcadia (Nottingham Playhouse), Life in Black (TV Pilot)); Roxana Lupu (Twelfth Night, Masca Theatre Bucharest), Taming of the Shrew (Act Theatre Bucharest) and Inside Buckingham Palace (Wildfire Television)); Clive Keene (Romeo & Juliet (Immersion Theatre, National Tour), Who Framed Roger Rabbit (Secret Cinema), The Life & Adventures of Nicholas Nickleby (The Space)); Thalissa Teixeira (The Broken Heart (The Globe), The Changeling (The Globe), Electra (The Old Vic) and The Musketeers (BBC)); and Alexander Forsyth (Angry Men (Chris Heydon, National Tour), War Machine (David Michod, Netflix/Plan B), Epidemic (Old Vic New Voices)).
Stuart first play, Cans, was also directed by Dan Pick and produced by Kuleshov. It ran at Theatre503 in November 2014, where it was highly acclaimed and was nominated for two Offies – ‘Best Play’, and ‘Most Promising New Playwright’. Cans transferred to the Teatro Belli, Rome, in October 2015.
BU21 is produced by Kuleshov, a theatre company led by Dan Pick and Stuart Slade.
