I Love You, You’re Perfect, Now Change. At The Arts Theatre 


2015’s CRITICALLY ACCLAIMED, SELL-OUT PRODUCTION RETURNS FOR TWO REUNION PERFORMANCES THIS SUMMER

Hartshorn – Hook Productions is thrilled to announce the reunion of last year’s critically-acclaimed cast in I Love You, You’re Perfect, Now Change. The production, nominated for Best Revival in last year’s Broadway World Awards, will return for two performances at the Arts Theatre on Monday 15th August.

Heading up the company once again is Simon Lipkin, who took over the role of Nathan Detroit in Guys and Dolls earlier this week, opposite Rebel Wilson, and earlier this year appeared in Miss Atomic Bomb (St James).

Joining Simon is West-End favourite Gina Beck, currently appearing as Magnolia Hawks in Daniel Evans’ acclaimed production of Show Boat at the New London, following its transfer from the Sheffield Crucible. 

Also returning is Julie Atherton who last year appeared as Sister Margaretta in ITV’s The Sound of Music Live. Atherton is perhaps best-known for her performance as Kate Monster in the Original London Cast of Avenue Q. 
Completing the cast is Samuel Holmes who most recently bared all as Bertie in Mrs Henderson Presents (Noël Coward and Theatre Royal Bath). Holmes will also be appearing as George in the upcoming National Tour of The Wedding Singer, which opens at the Leicester Curve next February.
The production will be directed by Kirk Jameson who most recently presented the London Premiere of The Great American Trailer Park (Waterloo East).

 For Musical Staging, Jameson will once more be joined by Sam Spencer-Lane, making this their third production together in as many years. Most recently Spencer-Lane recreated Jerome Robin’s choreography in the celebrated production of West Side Story (Kilworth House).

Scott Morgan completes the creative team as musical director. Morgan most recently accompanied Keith Jack on his UK Tour and Australian drag sensation Courtney Act during her UK shows.
This hilarious musical revue is penned by award-winning writers Joe DiPietro and Jimmy Roberts. DiPietro is known on both sides of the Atlantic for the four Tony Award-winning musical Memphis, which ran for over two years in the West End. Roberts s best known for his contributions to the musical revue A… My Name is Still Alice and The Thing About Men, which he also wrote with DiPietro. 

I Love You, You’re Perfect, Now Change follows the ups and downs of a modern day romantic relationship whilst attempting to answer some of life’s most infuriating questions; “What do women really want?, “What are men really thinking?“, and “Why, when we find the partner of our dreams, do we spend the rest of our lives trying to change them?”

‘Beauty’ And The Beast It Unleashes In A Female Creatives Consciousness 

You must get a lot of work being beautiful, and you know it”

I recently got told the above statement. It was by an elderly man from the audience, after I sung at a concert, who I believe, although extremely patronising, was not malicious in his comment, as he was also highly complimentary of my performance. But this got me thinking, would I have been told this if I was a male? No, I doubt that man would have made the same statement to him. 

I’m under no illusion, I know we live in a superficial society. I however find it always alarming the level of superficiality that seems to exist across age groups. Of course it would be a generalisation to say it’s everyone, but to an extent it is in some way. We all of course, find others attractive, most obviously partners and spouses etc, but that is totally different to judging someone and their whole skillset on physical appearance.

Being made to feel you only receive any sort of Arts work because of your looks, could very well be soul destroying. When you’ve worked hard for years and it’s paying off (as hard work always does), why listen to negativity that implies, because you are deemed attractive, that’s the only reason anyone employs you?

I don’t readily consider myself beautiful and find it heartbreaking that many females who are told that very statement, I base my article on, would take it seriously. Vulnerable or insecure females, who could interpret their worth in the arts as minimal due to such words, makes me so very sad. As I’m quite a resilient character I don’t let comments or sexist opinions upset me just make me more determined. 

My pledge to you if you’re reading this and get any such comment, please ignore it, you excel and work hard at what you contribute to the arts. Always remember that.

Be Careful What You Exchange for…The Haunting PETER SCHLEMIEL At Theatre N16

Peter Schlemiel is the arresting and haunting story of an ordinary man who foolishly exchanges his shadow for endless fortune and fame, and must face the bitter consequences. 

This brand new adaptation by Matthew Bosley is a physical, robust and darkly humorous reimagining of Adelbert von Chamisso’s classic 19th century novella, itself based on a popular German folk tale thought to have inspired the story of Peter Pan. Visually and aurally striking, the show plunges you into Peter’s extraordinary world of shadows, forests and existential dread, and confronts resonating issues today of status anxiety, the race for success, and social isolation.  

Theatre N16 are excited to host this high quality new work as a direct transfer from its premiere at the esteemed Postgraduate Theatre Directors’ season at Mountview Academy. This year, in collaboration with Postgraduate Creative Producers, they present ‘Mosaic’: a season of ten pieces, all of which are original or UK premieres. 

Matthew recently assisted Suzy Catliff on Bernarda Alba the Musical at the Unicorn Theatre, and recent professional directing work includes Been on the Job Too Long (Theatre N16) and Pinter’s The Dumb Waiter (Courtyard Theatre). With a background in movement and dance, his interest is in working with actors to create physically and atmospherically striking theatre.

Prepare to witness a performance like no other as The reFASHIONed Theatre opens at Selfridges with Much Ado About Nothing presented by critically-acclaimed theatre company, The Faction.

On the occasion of Shakespeare400, Selfridges are opening a fully-fledged theatre complete with workshops, rare access to rehearsals and a new production of Much Ado About Nothing. As the revolutionary store famed for introducing retail theatre to Europe, this is the next logical step for Selfridges – another world first.  
To create The reFASHIONed Theatre, Selfridges are joining forces with one of the most exciting emerging young British theatre companies in the UK, The Faction. With a reputation for contemporary Shakespeare productions and innovative collaborations, The Faction are the perfect partner for this unique venture.
Continuing Selfridges ethos of ‘all are welcome’, The Faction will offer audiences the chance to peer into rehearsals. Like the famous Selfridges window displays give a theatrical glimpse of what lays in store, this window onto the rehearsal process will present audiences with a daily insight into the development of a play from rehearsals to performance as well as offering opportunities to interact with the cast and creatives. Partner such as make-up brand MAC, will offer a workshop allowing visitors the chance to get back-stage and up-close to the creation of on-stage characters.
The reFASHIONed Theatre, an intimate 100-seat auditorium with a traverse, raised catwalk stage, is not just any pop-up. This complete theatre experience also includes a traditional box office, a designer royal box, a furniture designer and bespoke rig from Whitelight. 


One of Shakespeare’s best, and best-loved, comedies, Much Ado About Nothing contrasts the classic love story of Claudio and Hero with the ‘merry war’ of two of his most dazzling and original wits: Beatrice and Benedick. Whilst outside forces attempt to thwart Claudio and Hero’s wedding, Beatrice and Benedick’s families and friends conspire to bring them into married bliss. The play’s society is one where appearance and presentation are everything and rumour and gossip can be lethal.
 This contemporary production occupies a distinctly 21st century landscape of high style, tabloid journalism, CCTV and iconic events.

This play offers a world in which fashion, appearance, and social standing are of paramount importance and rumour, gossip and insinuation can be lethal. And, in Beatrice and Benedick, we have two of Shakespeare’s wittiest creations to play around with! Everyone at The Faction is delighted to be collaborating with Selfridges to create this new production for the Shakespeare Refashioned project. It’s an ambitious, innovative and wild idea – exactly the way we should be celebrating Shakespeare400.

A company of nine actors will perform in this exciting and ambitious production plus five ‘digital cameos’ will be pre-recorded and appear in projected CCTV footage digitally mapped onto mannequins manipulated by the live company. 

The Faction is part of the next generation of classical theatre making for both artists and audiences. While Shakespeare remains the backbone of their work, they also work interpreting other classical texts with a contemporary aesthetic to engage and excite local, national and international audiences. Building a diverse ensemble with a rolling repertoire, The Faction is a sustainable arts organisation for the 21st century. 

Shakespeare reFASHIONed is one of Selfridges’ most ambitious themed store-wide campaigns with a mix of bespoke window creations by leading fashion designers, special product collaborations and The reFASHIONed Theatre.
Selfridges is bringing modernity and heritage together on the same schedule, by inviting RADA to work alongside The Faction within the reFASHIONed Theatre. From 4th July, RADA will precede The Faction with a two-week residency to teach visitors stagecraft workshops and masterclasses – effectively an actor’s training – including audition and feedback workshops, production techniques classes and an introduction to dance and stage combat. 

Selfridges has been a top London destination and UK landmark for over a century, challenging the rules of retail from its inception. American entrepreneur Harry Gordon Selfridge, nicknamed ‘the showman of shopping’, launched his eponymous store in 1909. From the outset it was a retail revolution. For the first time customers were allowed to browse and touch products on display which in itself was a dramatic change, but Harry Selfridge’s own passion for the stage and the art of entertainment drove him to instil every aspect of the retail experience at his store with a sense of theatrical excitement. Retail theatre was born. Theatre and entertainment have been part of Selfridges’ DNA ever since.

Theatre503 Autumn Season Announced!


Theatre503 have released details of their autumn season, which as with previous ones, promises to be innovative and charismatic. Championing new writing, this theatre is a real sparkling gem in the London Fringe scene, that is undeniably red hot at the moment.

Emine is more interested in a dead cat than her kids. Al is lost in Grindr, discovering that having a love life is incompatible with his incessant need to mollycoddle his ungrateful, acid-tongued sister. Ayşea is a fierce and intelligent young woman who is drowning in the mire of social media. Screens, a new play by Stephen Laughton, focuses on a Turkish-Cypriot family barely treading water, clinging onto a sense of self and identity as it suddenly begins to unravel.

When Sarah, a young woman with Asperger’s Syndrome, comes to visit her sister and brother-in- law, what starts as a fortnight of family holiday, spirals into a nightmare of accusation and intrigue. A love triangle with a dangerous twist, this moving and funny play explores the everyday dilemmas of a young woman living with autism; what to eat, what to watch on TV, and how counter the ever- rising tension building within the trio.

Will she be his salvation? The Acedian Pirates challenges our understanding of mythology, and forces us to ask vital questions about military occupation.

One cold Christmas Eve, the Ghost of Christmas Past visits Mr Scrooge and transports him back in time in a bid to make him change his wicked ways. But Christmas Past makes a minor miscalculation and takes Scrooge back too far – all the way back to the time of fairy tales. Realising the error, Scrooge tries to get home. But with only a handful of unruly dwarves to help, will he make it back in time for Christmas? Or will he be trapped in the kingdom of magic mirrors, pirates and golden- haired heroines forever?

Critically acclaimed French theatre company Exchange Theatre return to the Drayton Arms this summer with a new adaptation of Moliere’s rarely-performed French farce The Doctor In Spite of Himself, playing in both English and French as part of the Bastille Festival 2016, which also includes workshops and other French productions.

In this classic Moliere affair, nothing is quite what it seems. Sganarelle is a drunk and beats his wife, who in return spreads the word that he is actually a brilliant doctor who can only work when he is beaten. Cue a stream of patients and beatings – and in spite of himself, it seems Sganarelle can perform miracles after all!
This farce marked Moliere’s return to the genre after a couple of years in the wilderness trying to take himself more seriously, and as such forms the basis for much of his later, more famous work. Unjustly overlooked, The Doctor In Spite of Himself offers a protean look into Moliere’s trademark wit, and a rare treat for French theatre lovers.

CTRL+ALT+DELETE by Emma Packer is a tale of resilience in the face of adversity. Amy Jones from Brixton is an emotionally charged girl with a strong political heart. She challenges the injustices of the world, where war rips communities apart, equality isn’t universal and your biggest enemies are sometimes the very ones who brought you into the world.

A child’s need for their mother’s love is a primal driving force. It doesn’t diminish with unavailability, it coexists with the terrible and damaging understanding that the one person who is supposed to love you without condition doesn’t. This show explores the myth that mothers are all loving and protective of their children which serves to isolate us from the truth and the harsh realities of life.

CTRL+ALT+DELETE examines and draws parallels between the control and abuse within a domestic setting and in the wider society from the Government, Media and the Police. This highly relevant piece addresses issues including immigration, the financial crisis, 2011 riots, the war on terrorism and the housing crisis.

Intertwining two very different worlds, CTRL+ALT+DELETE shows that maybe things aren’t as different as they first appear.
CTRL+ALT+DELETE was long listed for the Amnesty International Freedom of Expression Award who commented that the piece is a powerful and emotive production which is worthy of acknowledgement as both a theatrical and activist piece

Emma Packer performs earnestly and with zeal, cleverly weaving two very different but connected tales of injustice… Amy is…the underdog that triumphs in this intelligent and highly relevant piece. You’ll be rooting for her all the way (A Younger Theatre).

CTRL+ALT+DELETE is directed by Katherine Hayes who has directed a variety of Fringe and off West End productions. Her comedy I Don’t Care I Love It was a LOST Theatre festival finalist. This production sees further collaboration between Emma and Katherine since their work in Edinburgh 2014. 

CTRL+ALT+DELTE has been re-written and developed since it was seen at the Edinburgh Festival in 2014.

Decisions…No One Likes Making Them. Everyone Has To Make Them 

We spend a majority of our time, in our day to day life, making decisions. Of course there will be the do I have coco pops or toast? type dilemmas we all have to make, these are daily decisions that shape our short term future. 

Then there are the more profound decisions, that are made regarding our careers in the arts. These decisions can change our whole career and of course our lives. A lot of the time we make these decisions alone, usually as we feel no one else (unless in the industry), would be that interested if you accept a role or perform that song. You spend so much time contemplating things in your own head, it can be rather exhausting and even others in the arts, you hide this from.

Sometimes, it can feel a sign of weakness, if you take a while to make a realisation. It’s not that of course, you just need to consider how something will impact and hopefully enhance your life. We all say yes to things, hoping it will have some cause and effect, in some capacity. 

Remember, if you make a decision in your career that you regret, see it as an experience and lesson learned. Everyone is in the same position, everyone is frightened on a daily basis, whether they admit it or not, about a range of decisions they have to make. Do what is right for you as a creative.
